That's impressive! I've been to Europe and America, and I was born in Canada and lived there for 5 years, but I'm ashamed to say that although I'm African, I've only been to one African country (my own lol). I should really visit Egypt, it's so close to where I live!

I've been to several European countries, but sadly not Germany! I may go there soon though, since I'm participating in a German program for young filmmakers, and if all goes well my short movie might be screened in Berlin!

I think it's safe to say that all Wodehouse fans are great lovers of the English language ♥

I knew Stephen Fry only from listening to audio books read by him. Sherlock Holmes was my first one. I liked his voice but for a pretty long time I had no idea that he was known for more than reading audio books.
Jeeves and Wooster stuff kept on showing up on my tumblr dash from time to time and I always found that valet guy very nice to look at. One day he was so attractive in a GIF that I decided to look up that show.
I watched the first episode on YouTube, quickly fell for Jeeves and bought the DVDs. It was funny to find out that he was played by Stephen Fry.
Then I looked up Stephen Fry and crushed on him.
I started reading fanfic and the books, have read most of the books by now and here I am.

By the way I remember being confused when I read the first Wodehouse style Jeeves fic without having read a Jeeves book before. Not having been familiar with Bertie's way of telling the stories, I had difficulties understanding what POV the fic was told from because there was "I" and "the young master" and Jeeves. So who was "I"? XD

It's a funny story. And - as weird as it may sound - it all started with Star Trek.

I'm a huge Trek fan. I read and write a LOT of Trek fanfic. One day (about 4 year ago) I strumbled upon a fic called "What ho, Garak!" (Garak being the name of a Star Trek character). Curious, I read it. It was written in what I would later discover was Wodehousian style and humor. I loved it - I reread it a dozen times. I was so impressed that I asked the writer how and why they'd written it in that particular style. Their answer was two words: "READ WODEHOUSE".

I did. I read "Right Ho, Jeeves" and "Thank you, Jeeves" and "Carry On, Jeeves" and I just couldn't get enough. Sadly, it's difficult to get English copies of Wodehouse books in my country, so after reading everything I could find I just felt heartbroken and hungry for more. That's when I started watching the TV series, which I fell in love with as well.

Now whenever I'm abroad the first thing I do is look for a bookshop to buy more Wodehouse (and I still haven't read them all! *sobs*)

That's exactly what my sister said when I tried to make her read a Jeeves novel! hahaha

I fell hard for Hugh Laurie during the first season of House and watched everything he's done. After watching J&W I read a bunch of the Jeeves short stories, but most of my Wodehouse knowledge is from the show, and honestly from fanfic I guess! I had a minor phase with J&W fanfic a few years ago but for no particular reason it has recently come back with a vengeance. Well okay, maybe this kink meme is that particular reason.

That's an interesting story. Would you share the link to that fic?
Fandom life began for me with Star Trek. I was a Trekkie throughout my teenage years and early twenties. My first crush on a fictional character can be blamed on TOS.

Can you get English ebook or audio book versions in your country?

Oh, a fellow Trekkie! Who was your first fictional crush, if you don't mind my asking? Spock? Kirk? Bones? Uhura? (I'm sorry, I get excited whenever someone mentions Trek)

Here's a link to the wonderful fanfic that started it all:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/2887163/chapters/6444233

I could get ebooks or audio books, but sadly I'm one of those people who just don't enjoy listening to books as much as reading them, and I've never managed to finish an ebook - I need the feel of paper between my hands.
So I guess it's just me being very picky lol

Thank you for the link!
I really loved each one of the logic+emotion+balance power trio but it was Bones my teen self would have liked to cuddle with.
Who are your favourite Trek characters?

I can totally understand how you feel about ebooks. Though I like the advantage of quick accessibility/easy portability and the convenient search function that the use of an e-reader provides it will never give me this nice, satisfying book reading feeling.
I used to have printouts of my favourite fanfics for a long time.

Have you tried looking for the books on ebay or Amazon?

You're very welcome!
Ah yes, the good doctor ♥ I love all Star Trek characters (more or less. I wish I could punch Gul Dukat from DS9, lol) but my favorite from the very start has always been Spock ♥ Julian Bashir from DS9 is the one I identify with the most, and I'm obsessed with Q from TNG. Gosh, I could go on and on! haha

I used to have printouts of my favorite fanfics as well!

Actually I ordered "Carry On, Jeeves" from Amazon, but the shipping cost is insane, so I didn't order more :( However I will (hopefully) be travelling to Paris soon so I'll make sure to drop by my favorite English bookshop there :D

What really makes me feel anxious about this community is not people clogging up threads with off-topic or things I'm not interested in, but people being told to better take their talk elsewhere and that leading to them worrying about bothering someone with what they post. I rather see them spam but have fun and connect. I only feel safe about reading the prompts, fills and anon commenting on them. And I think I should stick to that.

I also don't see what's wrong with people mentioning other fandoms here, or why they should be called out like this for doing so. Especially in this case where it's still extremely relevant and brief. I don't think it "clogs" a lounge thread that's specifically for friendly discussion. The intro says "anything goes" even "what you had for lunch" but people get scolded if they talk about Star Trek for a minute? Seems like an arbitrary request.
Also I have no problem with people identifying themselves if they want to.

If there are topics I don't want to read about then I simply move on to the next. Just like with everything else here. If there's a pic of naked Stephen Fry and I don't feel like staring at it then I quickly scroll past it. If I know it's not my kink then I stay away from that kink. And if I start reading a fic but find out I don't like it for whatever reason then I simply stop reading it.

tldr The best approach is to pick out what appeals to you and ignore what does not but leave it be because it might appeal to someone else.

Yes, I don‘t mind some other topics being discussed either, if we can talk about our cultural backgrounds, why can‘t we talk about Star Trek or something else for a bit?
And aren‘t it always topic junctions and coincidences which lead to the really interesting conversations?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-27 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I would like to ask for a fic rec, please! I don't really want to bother starting a whole new thread for this, and it looks like the plot bunny farm on [community profile] indeedsir is pretty inactive so I doubt anyone will see it there. So I'm gonna ask here instead!

Has anyone ever come across a fic about those eight months that Jeeves and Bertie were lost at sea after jumping overboard that ship (in the TV show, didn't happen in the books)? I would love to read about that but I've never come across something like it. I suspect it doesn't exist. I would post this in the kink prompts thread but it's really not a kink at all.

ACK UGH NO

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I just read a newly posted death fic called "To You, Reginald Jeeves" on AO3. Jeeves dies after being attacked and Bertie has to give a speech at the funeral. ACK NO TOO MANY FEELS I WISH I HADN'T READ THAT

I usually give 'Major Character Death' fics a wide berth and again I'm reminded why. However, if you enjoy that sort of thing, it's well done and will definitely make you cry or at least sit in the dark staring at nothing.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I rewatched that episode just the other day and had the exact same thought! I might try to write something for this prompt, whenever I have the time!

I'm going to read that, even though I KNOW it will make me cry a lot. For some reason I'm drawn to those sad fanfics like a moth to a flame.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, thanks, I hope you do! It's just such an extraordinary, ridiculous turn of events and sounds like a hell of an adventure, but then it never gets mentioned again. I gotta know more about it.
