A Question about hats

(Anonymous) 2019-06-29 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to write a fill and need to know what kind of hat Jeeves is wearing at 0:31-0:32 and 2:17-2:23 in this scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yR9C0Y3PVP0 (sfw, the link is to the montage of Jeeves living it up in NYC)

I've google image searched fedoras and trilbies but I can't be sure. The entire "plot" somehow hinges around the type of hat Jeeves wears for going out at night so I want to get it right!

Thank you! I also just noticed that it's in the picture on the top of this post. I think the heatwave must be melting my brain. Searching for advertisements helps with tuxedos too so thanks for that idea as well. Less of the modern cheap fancy dress costume stuff.

I just spent the last 20 minutes reading about the difference between homburg vs. fedora vs. trilby vs. bowler/derby vs. boater vs. Panama vs. pork pie... I've been meaning to look these up for a while so I'm glad I finally got this excuse. Looking forward to reading this fill now too!

Jeeves's restorative

[personal profile] outofelsinore 2019-07-04 11:10 am (UTC)(link)
What ho! I have no idea if this weird story belongs here, but here goes!

Recently, I listened to an audiobook of Jeeves Takes Charge with a friend while we were both rather under the surface, and of course, we ended up discussing Jeeves's hangover cure and agreeing that we wished it existed, because it'd certainly be a godsend the next morning given how sozzled we were both becoming. The story (if I recall correctly) says the recipe calls for Worcester sauce, raw egg, and chili peppers, and while we didn't quite have the guts to follow the recipe (since nobody fancies the possibility of salmonella from raw egg) we came up with a coffee-based drink that we named The Palpitator which indeed has a whole pepper (can be red or green depending on how strong you want it to be) as the secret ingredient of sorts. We made it and tried it out the next morning, and even if it definitely wasn't as magical as Jeeves's concoction (I mean, the man's a paragon, how could two drunk uni students reach his heights) it still helped somewhat and made us feel much less sluggish and cranky! We also tried it out the week after that as we prepared for a nerve-wracking stat final and found it kept us awake and clear-headed enough to finish the exam coverage, ahaha. The only downside is that this drink is /really, really, really/ strong and definitely not something I would give to a person who's caffeine sensitive or struggles with hyperacidity XD

If anyone else has made an attempt at recreating the restorative or wants to discuss it in general I'd love to know! I'm pretty sure it isn't real and that making that exact concoction probably isn't a good idea, but I find it really cool regardless~

This was really fun to read! hahaha Thank you for sharing the story!
For health reasons, I can't drink anything that contains caffeine, and peppers are also out of the question for me :( But I'm still interested in what the others might suggest!

Oh gosh, that's some strong stuff to say the least. I've heard of the hair-of-the-dog-that-bit-you approach (and I thiiiink I've seen it mentioned in jooster fic?), and even if it's probably effective, hungover me would probably be extremely put out by the idea of even more alcohol in my system, ahahaha!

Oof, I can't imagine not being allowed any caffeine ever - I practically rely on the stuff to get me out of bed (though I'd like to think I'm not seriously dependent on it - yet) and I have no idea how I'd survive all-nighters without it !!!

Yeah, at first I had a hard time avoiding caffeine, but the effects on my nervous and digestive systems are so disastrous that it's frankly not worth it... but I used to be a coffee lover *sigh*

J&W headcanons

Do you have any Jeeves and Wooster headcanons you would like to share?

I'll start this off simply: I think of Jeeves as 10 years older than Bertie (although I know there's no official answer). Born in 1890 and 1900 if I want Bertie to be in his mid-20s during mid-Prohibition. Maybe 1900 and 1910 if I want them to be alive and kicking in the 70s and 80s.

I tend to go with Wodehouse's purposefully vague idea of when the events in the Jeeves stories take place. I mean, obviously it's somewhere between the early 20s and late 30s, but I like not knowing exactly when. It's almost as if there is no War, no Great Depression, no Prohibition in the Wodehouse World. Everything is oojah-cum-spiff. I quite like that, to be honest, that sort of complete innocence. I find that not knowing exactly when things are happening makes it all the more light-hearted and happy.

My headcanons for Jeeves and Bertie's ages are only a little bit more specific. I place Jeeves as approximately 10 years older than Bertie, and I like to think that when they met Bertie was in his early-to-mid twenties.

In my mind they look a bit like they do in the TV show, but not exactly. It's hard to describe really. Let's just say that their general appearance does resemble that of the TV show, but there are little details that in my mind are different.

Other than that I have a few random headcanons I'd like to share:
- They only get together after a few years of good ol' pining
- Even when they're alone, Jeeves almost never calls Bertie by his name. He uses a myriad of terms of endearments (such as "darling", "my dear", "dearest") but never "Bertie" or "Bertram".
- Once or twice Jeeves actually does call him Bertie/Bertram, but only in cases of immediate danger. When they've had a row, Jeeves goes back to calling Bertie "sir", even when they're alone.
- Bertie keeps calling him "Jeeves" for quite some time, but eventually it becomes "Reg" or "Reggie".
- They eventually adopt a cat (Bertie with a cat is just too adorable)

Aaaaw kitty!

ladykeane's modern AU Bertie's Blog stories have this adorable thing where Reg calls Bertie all sorts of silly nicknames. Such as "my radiant faun" and "my peppermint". In that context it works perfectly. I highly recommend all of them.

I am into the "dignified endearments normally, Bertram or sir occasionally" paradigm. There's also a part of me that likes "Mr. Wooster/sir" forever no matter what kind of relationship that develops.
