question about commenting

(Anonymous) 2019-07-08 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it better to comment anon or off anon on the fills? I've seen both here. Does it make a difference to the writer? Does an off anon comment seem more real and more valuable or can an off anon comment maybe be a mood killer?

I do the same. Sometimes I feel comfortable enough to comment off-anon, but sometimes I prefer the anonymity :)

We all seem to agree hehehe
And I love the idea of Jeeves calling Bertie silly nicknames in the context of that modern AU! So sweet and funny! I really have to read that fic ~

Personally, I prefer off-anon comments on my stories because I just like to know who's out there reading and who I'm connecting with. Definitely never a mood killer, so as long as you're comfortable, go ahead. I totally understand the desire to comment on anon though and I do it for various reasons myself.

I think it would be a loss if Jeeves stopped using "sir" and "Mr Wooster" because I'm really into that. Dignified endearments are fine but I like thinking they keep "Jeeves" or "sir" and just change the way they say it.

I agree. It bothers me when first names are used, especially for Jeeves. "Reggie" and "Reginald" just don't suit him!

Not to mention, it also seems unnecessarily risky to switch between endearments in private and formal honorifics in public. Could easily result in an incriminating slip-up.

The way I imagine them depends on what I'm reading.

If it's fanfic then I tend to picture them looking and speaking pretty much like their TV actors but with Jeeves being about 10 to 15 years older than Bertie.

When I read the books I imagine them in a different way but the age difference of 10 to 15 years stays the same here. I like to think that Bertie has an average or slightly below the average height and Jeeves is tall. Also that Jeeves has noticeably manlier (as in terms of looking mature) build than Bertie with broader shoulders but nothing muscle heavy or bulky and a bit of body hair in all the right places. Bertie is slender but not skinny and still has a more teenage boyish build and about the same dose of body hair as Jeeves. He will naturally get a more mature build with the years passing by but will always be a rather slim guy and narrower shouldered than Jeeves. I imagine them speaking more like how Martin Jarvis reads them on the audio books. I love how he reads Jeeves. To me his version comes closer to canon Jeeves than Stephen Fry's Jeeves if one chooses to rely on Bertie as a narrator when it comes to the description of Jeeves' emontionlessness. (I love Stephen Fry's Jeeves but his version requires accepting that Jeeves is able to express quite a lot of emotion with his micro expressions, his rather expressive eyes and his eyebrows move more than that famous fraction. ;) Martin Jarvis' Bertie may require a bit of getting used to but he makes him sound so much younger than Jeeves, which I think is great and he is good at expressing Bertie's cheerfulness and carefreeness. One can clearly hear the smile in his voice when he speaks.
I headcanon the stories taking place over the course of many years because it can be nice witnessing the age progression of someone you like and being able to look back on many years spent together.

Oh! "My darling Mr. Wooster" does sound absolutely perfect and just like something Jeeves would say.

"Reg" and "Reggie" sounds to me more like how Bertie would call him if he had matey feels for Jeeves. If there would have been the step "to friends" before "to lovers" then maybe I could make it work in my head.

I'm okay with the use "Reginald" but I don't like Jeeves using "Bertram" or "Bertie" so much. Then again I could also totally understand Bertie wishing Jeeves to call him that as a step to more intimacy or as a proof that Jeeves is relaxed around him and sees in him more than his employer.

Oh yes, I definitely will! It's just that I've been very busy lately and I haven't had time to do anything but leave the occasional comment. I miss my trusty laptop :(

Awesome headcanon I came across on Tumblr (https://dorkshadows.tumblr.com/post/113749310661/i-might-kind-of-sort-of-be-developing-a-headcanon) and immediately adopted for myself:
I might kind of sort of be developing a headcanon for young!Jeeves. Since he worked at an all girls’ boarding school in his adolescence, one of the girls could have been lazy about her classes and bribed him to crossdress and attend in her place (when he’s off-duty). And going by Bertie’s descriptions of him, Jeeves probably was pretty enough to do that.

Fic rec for a newbie?

(Anonymous) 2019-08-09 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Hey y'all! My partner just told me she finally wants to check out some of this strange "Jeeves and Wooster fanfiction" that I've been talking about for a while now. I'm excited that she's finally intrigued enough to give it a try. Does anyone have recommendations for a good fic to start with? Something on AO3 maybe? She's seen like one episode of the show and hasn't read any Wodehouse, so she isn't terribly familiar with the details of the series. She's also not a fanfic person in general. She's more curious to learn what's so compelling to me about the sex/erotica aspect of the fanfic. So, something hot and accessible to non-fans is what I'm looking for.

Oh, and a length on the shorter side.

Neither of us read regularly as much as we'd like to. Definitely nothing too romantic or mushy, though. She's more like curious about m/m. She'll probably like stories with humor and kink.
I think she gets the basic sensibilities and I can explain anything that needs more background/context.
