Is anyone else watching Avenue 5?

[personal profile] quaffanddoff 2020-02-02 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
It's this new HBO show with Hugh Laurie. There are only three episodes out so far and they're getting mixed reviews, but I'm enjoying it. I'm not sure where the online fandom is happening - maybe there isn't one yet - but I'm craving some discussion of the show.

I would like to watch it but I would have to get a rather expensive monthly subscription in order to see it.

Argh, bummer! I'm watching it on someone else's account myself.

oh yeah I watched the first 3 eps! I adore Matt. And why is Hugh Laurie getting more attractive with age, it's really not fair.

It kinda reminds me of watching an adaptation of a Douglas Adams book only not quite as confusing. (I am a big fan of Dirk Gently but I watched it more bc I love the characters than trying to follow the plot lol)

Oh awesome! Hard agree on adoring Matt, he's like this friendly timid pushover punching bag, but at the same time possibly an aggressive lunatic at the end of his rope? And even harder agree on Hugh Laurie's improbably increasing attractiveness. The silver hair/beard is sooo working for me. I'm also pretty enthused about what we just learned about his marriage (I'm being vague here to avoid spoiling anyone else).

Never seen Dirk Gently unfortunately! I do get strong Douglas Adams vibes from both the comedy and a lot of the space stuff. But then again, Hitchhiker's Guide is my main point of reference for all of sci-fi/space travel, I'm not very familiar with the genre. The ship's intrusive ads and brand messaging and shameless self-marketing seem like they're a similar type of parody to the Heart of Gold/Sirius Cybernetics Corporation. Plus there's that same concept of a huge, expensive, cutting-edge piece of advanced technology being run by a bunch of irresponsible idiots who barely understand it.

lol, yes, Matt is all those things. I'm prob the same age as him but I wish I could adopt him T-T
ah yes, the marriage is so cute!! I was thrilled to see those relationships represented! At the same time if he's gonna be stuck in space for so long I kind of want him to hook up with that blond lady who's unhappily married (or she & her husband are having a little dispute--we'll see)?
I lol'd at the...spoiler alert...things orbiting the ship like it's a planet.

Judd reminds me of someone in Hitchhiker's Guide but it's been so long since I've seen it. I just vaguely remember a dumb but well-meaning guy with blond-ish hair--like him but more of a d-bag lol. (I highly recommend Dirk Gently if you get a chance! There are a lot of characters I love but Dirk has the same dumbass energy as Bertie Wooster and I would die for him.)

I was also thrilled to see that represented and not just as ridiculous/as a joke. Maybe Ryan could hook up with the unhappily married blonde lady AND her husband. 😏

Oh yeah, I would guess you're thinking of Zaphod, who is kind of a dumb blond type, though he's supposed to be more of a charming rogue, unlike Judd who's less sympathetic because his arrogance comes at a cost to others.

I just added Dirk Gently to my never-ending list of things to watch, so thanks for the rec!

I was falling behind a bit and am catching up on the last 2 episodes. Matt made a big mistake and I just want to scoop him up and cuddle the poor, precious baby!

Also it's hilarious how much Ryan is becoming less "The Captain" and more like Hugh Laurie as the show goes on--I mean, first the accent and now the hair! He looks great, actually maybe even better. ^_^ I've had a feeling that he and Billie would eventually get together, though maybe not anymore at this point. She's the smartest person on that ship and would deserve better anyway lol.

So...I do adore Ryan and Matt, and there were definitely some good moments and solid jokes, but I have to say that overall, I was disappointed with the show. I didn't find it nearly as funny or entertaining as I expected based on all the massive talent and hype behind it. My expectations were probably way too high, but the whole thing seemed very uneven, jumbled, and meh to me. Did you finish the season? What did you think?

I finished it and I agree--I missed the hype though. I thought it was just an okay show, uneven as you said, and worth watching for my precious Matt. :3 I feel like it came out in a weird time in history and in tv. I'm pointlessly digressing here, but I was thinking a story like this would have done better if it came out in another time, like in the 2000s. People in the US and England were bitter and cynical about pres GW Bush and PM Tony Blair and it was cool to poke fun at yuppies like the ones on Avenue 5 (and we *laughed* at Bush too). Nowadays we have real-life politicians who are worse than the characters who are supposed to be horrible & incompetent but in a *funny* way and in our present situation it's hard to laugh.

I will either wait for it to come to Netflix or Amazon or when the first season will be out I could pay for a Sky subscription and watch all episodes in a month.
