cuddyclothes: (Scared Stephen)

For months now, your loving mod has been meaning to post excerpts from Stephen Fry's wonderful boyhood memoir, Moab Is My Washpot. But find them and typing them out has been something I've put off until today, when I need to procrastinate on something else!

In Bertie and Jeeves fics there are always references to learning about gay sex at Eton, but how much do we know about it, other than  offhand references? Stephen Fry's boyhood richly describes what happened to him throughout his school years. At 13, in the 1960s, Stephen went to a similar public school to Eton, Uppingham, in the 1960s. Prior to that he attended a preparatory school called Stouts Hill, where at 12 years old he learned about the complex way boys looked at "queering":

At my last year at prep school, it had become very much the thing amongst a handful of us in our senior dormitory to do a fair amount of fooling around when the others were asleep. A couple of the boys were equipped with a set of fully operational testicles and bushy pubic undergrowth, others like me were not. I greatly enjoyed creeping over to another boy's bed and having a good old rummage about. I never knew quite what it was I enjoyed, and certainly the first time I saw semen erupt from a penis it gave me the fright of my life.

One of the boys, Halford, like me not fully ripened, took the same pleasure I did in wandering around the school naked. Together we would, with roaring stiffies, or what passed for roaring stiffies in our cases. creep around the bathrooms simply glorying in our nakedness. We might point and prod and giggle and fondle each other a little, and experiment with the that curious squashing of dicks in closing doors and desk lids that seems to please the young, but it was the nakedness and the secrecy that provided all the secrecy we needed.

~~~~~
One afternoon, Fry's friend Halford got a cramp in his leg after swimming. Stephen helped him up and walked Halford around the pool until the cramp had gone. Halford immediately streaked away:
As the afternoon wore on, it became apparent to me that I seemed suddenly to have become extremely unpopular. I simply couldn't understand it...It was bewildering, but inescapable: boys were cutting me dead, sneering openly at me, sending me to Coventry and falling suddenly silent when I entered rooms.
Stephen discovers that his friend said Stephen put his around him "like a queer. Halford is hopping mad. He wants to beat you up." Stephen almost faints from terror:
Halford thought I was queer because I had put my arm round him! Put my arm round him to support him! The very same Halford who was wandering naked with me around the bathroom not two nights previously. The Halford who taught me how to  shut my cock in a door. The Halford who did a backward somersault naked  on the floor at me and pushed his finger up his arse, giggling. He thought I was queer?
Fortunately, Stephen, weeping, tells the story to the history master, Mr. Bruce. At tea, Mr. Bruce said: "I have a special announcement to make" and praised Stephen for helping Halford. "I am awarding Fry five merits for this sensible, cool action."
...After one and a half seconds of unbearable silence, palms began to rain down congratulatory thumps upon my back, Halford rose sheepishly from his bench to thank me and I was in favour once more.[ ] But does that not tell you something of the psychological minefield one trod through in those days, when it came to questions of sexual nature, of sexuality, as we would say now? The difference between sexual play and queering; the blind terror that physical affection inspired, but the easy acceptance of erotic games.
What do you think about this? The next post will be about the first phase of Stephen's time at Uppingham, where he is ashamed of his slow physical development and learns about more games boys play.
This week's New York Times Magazine has a featured article!
The Valet And The Drifter Helping Me Get Through Quarantine
Excerpt:
One of these heroes, created by the immortal humorist P.G. Wodehouse, is a charming and brilliant British valet employed by a member of the idle rich named Bertie Wooster, to Wooster’s perpetual relief; the other is a 6-foot-5 former military police investigator and Marine sniper-contest champion who wanders America punching his way into and out of trouble thanks to the wonderfully artless imagination of Lee Child. These are the characters whose stories I’ve been craving since this nightmare began. I kicked off my pandemic reading binge by pulling a Jeeves anthology from the bookshelf and a Reacher novel from the public library. Once the libraries closed, I maintained my fix by downloading Reacher novels to my phone. I end each day in bed mentally spooning with one of these two goofy, gallant men.
How is everyone doing, dealing with the pandemic? We have an international membership so presumably people are affected by it all over the world. Your faithful mod is in New York City, which is now considered the epicenter of the virus. Everything "non-essential" is closed. I'll look up essential services later. We're suffering from a terrible lack of beds and hospital equipment. And the POS covered in orange greasepaint is only making things worse.
How are you coping? I've gone past "staring at the TV dumbly" to "wandering around the apartment, looking out the window, stunned". We can still get takeout, so there's that.
Bear in mind you can respond to this post anonymously, whether you're a member or not.
I posted this in the Fandom After Dark thread but it kind of got lost. It's from the blog Emsworth on Wordpress. There's an interesting discussion to be had about Wodehouse, sex, real life, etc. In the recent McCrum biography there's a fair amount about PGW's sexuality (or lack thereof).
My personal headcanon is that PGW had a portrait of Ramon Novarro over his writing desk and pleasured himself in his private bathroom to pictures of George O'Brien and Clark Gable.
It's the holidays! Over on The Lounge thread some cheeky folks are saying they're going to be reading, prompting, and commenting! If there is anything you'd like to say about the holidays? Good, bad, indifferent?
What gifts do you think do you think Bertie and Jeeves would give each other? What did Gussie give Madeline that upset her? (Besides newts, I mean!) What has Tuppy always wanted?
What happens when the Drones drink too much eggnog? Was eggnog even a thing back then?
I used to love Christmas, but in later years, not so much. However, I'm going to decorate a tree and hang a Christmas wreath on my apartment door. I usually have a dried eucalyptus wreath. So today I shall venture out and grab one!
Bertie hated visiting his cousins on holidays, not the least because Aunt Lucy got drunk and tried to be seductive.
Please stop by The Lounge!
Your faithful mod is She Who Keeps The Inbox for all of the sticky posts. Quite a few interesting topics get brought up and responded to but then get lost in the crush. It seemed like a nice idea to put some of them here, with links to the discussions. (Your faithful mod is also She Who Will Do Anything To Procrastinate.) There are many others besides these, of course!  Including a Submission/Dominance thread, and why is Honoria hot?
Question: Sexual Activity With Wodehouse Characters
What sexual activity do you want with who?
What Does Jeeves Symbolize?
I was reading over the many phenomenal fills in the kinkiness thread, and I found myself asking: Jeeves has an interesting place in fan's psychology. Anyone care to talk about this?
What Does Bertie Symbolize?
Kissing
What it says on the tin. Questions about writing kissing scenes
I would encourage posters like the last to put those in the Discussion of Fills and Prompts post, but really, there's no hard and fast rule.
Plus, [personal profile] thesadchicken has some lovely Sims artwork in the Lounge thread.
